How To Talk To People And Make Conversation
A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that they need to think of something creative, witty, or unique when they start a conversation with someone. The best part is… YOU DON’T!
Actually, some of the best conversation starters are the most common, basic ones.
Think of it like this. When you start your car, do you open up the hood, inject fuel into the engine and manually crank it up every single time?
Of course not.
That’s way too much work—and that’s what the key, ignition and starter are for.
The same goes for starting conversations.
Instead of trying to come up with something funny, creative, charming, witty, or unimaginably interesting, it’s perfectly fine to use mechanisms that are in place already.
That means it’s perfectly fine to use generic conversation starters like “how are you” and “what’s up,” use observations from your environment, ask for opinions and talk about simple things like the news.
The bottom line is, saying something is better than saying nothing at all.
How you start the conversation may not be original—but that’s not the point! The point is that you’re forming a bond with another person. If you use a simple, common and easy way for both people to join together in conversation, you can end up in a deeper, more meaningful conversation later if you end up liking the person.
So, the best rule of thumb here is to start out simple. Ask a question that doesn’t require a whole lot of thought or insight and can be answered easily.
More complex questions can come later.
The bottom line is, saying SOMETHING is better than saying nothing at all. The moment words are exchanged, your chances of getting to know that person are improved DRAMATICALLY.
What happens when you say nothing? You guessed it—nothing.
I’ve found that there are four main kinds of conversation starters. They’re all extremely easy to use and don’t require any special effort on your part.
They are:
- All-purpose, generic conversation starters
- Observation-based conversation starters
- Opinion-based conversation starters
- Topic-based conversation starters
