What Being More Social Brings
A Better, More Fulfilling Life All Around
Improving your social skills can bring tons of benefits.
First off, you won’t be as irritated or annoyed by other people. Your tolerance for others will go up. Things that used to bother you will be overlookable.
For instance, I used to HATE making small talk (let alone that I was bad at it). Now, it’s just part of the norm and I do it without thinking about it.
Also, you won’t take it personally when people act defensive and passive aggressive because you’ll realize WHY they’re acting this way (we’ll get into that later).
Being social makes you smarter. People who socialized for 10 minutes before an exam did significantly better.
I used to sit at home on weekends bored out of my mind. I had nothing to do, nobody to call up to make plans with, and generally felt like a loser. Once you improve this part of your life, hanging out with friends will be totally optional. You’ll have the power to TURN DOWN plans if you want to.
You won’t be sitting at home with nothing to do because that was the only option!
You’ll be able to just get out there and socialize when you feel like it, which is a beautiful thing.
Meeting a group of people, hanging out with them for a while, and then transitioning to another location to meet up with a few others will feel totally natural. It won’t cause anxiety, nervousness, nor will it make you want to run out of there as fast as you can.
Also, expect to feel more comfortable with who you are as a person. When you get this part of your life handled, you’ll find that it’s a lot easier to express yourself around others without feeling like you’re being judged or criticized. You’ll experience social liberty.
And, of course, if you’re looking for romance, your chances of finding someone right for you will increase SIGNIFICANTLY. The more people you know, the more people you know THROUGH those people, which means more opportunities to meet potential love interests!
It was also discovered in a study published by the UM Institute for Social Research that socializing actually improves cognitive performance. In the study, the people who socialized for 10 minutes before an exam did significantly better!
And in another study, people with positive interactions and friends were actually healthier than their negative counterparts (see chapter 16 of Social Intelligence by Daniel Goleman).
So, not only will you feel great about yourself and live a fuller life, but you’ll actually think clearer and overall be healthier!
